Pygmalion
Word of the Day :Pygmalion
I was browsing Yahoo news earlier today. That s my normal routine as soon as i sit down on my work place. I get paid for doing that. :)
Then, I saw it. Pygmalion. That word is just as foreign as a Durian in Aberdeen.
What is this? Then, I read it.
A plastic surgeon fell in love with his own patient because of the beauty that she has become. THis term was actually derived from Ovid's narrative.
According to this, Pygmalion is actually a person's name. Don't ask why they did not name him Bob or Steve. People were swag back then I guess. This dude was a sculptor anyway. He needed the publicity.
Due to his traumatic experience upon seeing the Propoetides prostituting themselves, he somehow became "uninterested in women". No. He wasnt gay. He is somewhat a moralist i guess. Being a sculptor that he was, he actually carved a woman out of ivory. He even named it Galatea. Since he despised women due to prostitution, he somehow developed a feeling towards his own sculpture.
He sees the sculptureas being fair and realistic ( i think he was a loser in his time)
Long story cut short, during the Venus festival, Pygmalion, like other people gave offering at the altar of Venus. There,he quietly wishes for a bride that resembles his own sculpture.
Back home, feeling excited over the wish, he kissed the sculpture.
To his surprise, the lips felt warm.
Then, being a guy with high testosterone level, he caressed her breast.
Whoaaaa...It was warm too!! and tender...
Venus granted his wish..he got the sculpture as his wife.
The end.
